Potty Training Tips

  • Kennel Train First (Use a large crate, or small exercise pen.¬† Put bedding¬†on one side & Pee Pad on the¬†other side but make sure they are¬†touching. Always make sure your puppy has water available.)¬† Many puppies¬†will not be physically able to go more than 3-4 hours without a potty break until they are 1 year old, so it is important to provide an area for them to potty overnight or if you have to leave them for more than 3 hours during the day.
  • Take your puppy out first thing in the morning
  • Take your puppy out every 2-3 hours during the day.
  • Take your puppy out within 15 minutes after he/she eats and as soon as he/she wakes from a nap
  • Reward when a potty trip is successful (hugs, praise and loving)
  • Make sure that every potty trip is at least 10-15 minutes long to give your puppy time to play.
  • We¬†use a 4’x4′ exercise pen in our¬†house with the puppies.¬† They are pee pad trained and during the day they go outside to potty, but they will need to learn their new environment and where you want him/her to go. ¬†Starting at 6 weeks old we lead them outside¬†and they follow us¬†to the grass to potty, and they catch on quickly.
