Dachshund Colors

Dachshunds Come in Many Colors

RED
Red is the most common color for a dachshund. Red can be any shade of red from blonde to a deep mahogany. You can have a clear red which means no dark hairs anywhere in the coat or you can have black hairs interspersed — either of these is still just red. It should have black eyes, black nose, and black nails unless it is a ‘chocolate-based red’ which means it will have green eyes and its nose and nails will be liver colored as in the chocolate and tan. For a red to produce black/tans it must carry the tan point gene. A red that does not carry the tan point gene cannot ever produce anything but red puppies.

BLACK/TAN
Black/tan is the second most common color. The dachshund will be black all over with tan points (tan feet, over eyes, on face around muzzle, on chest, under tail). It will have black eyes, nose, and black nails.

BLACK
Black will be black all over without any tan points. It will have black eyes, black nose, and black nails.

CHOCOLATE/TAN
Chocolate/tan will be from milk chocolate to a rich dark chocolate brown with tan points (tan on feet, over eyes, on face around muzzle, on chest, under tail). It will have a brown to light brown nose and nails. A true chocolate/tan will never have a black nose. It will have brown to light brown eyes and on occasion green to hazel eyes. This is a recessive color and must be showing or carried in both parents to appear.

CHOCOLATE
Chocolate will be a dark chocolate brown all over without any tan points. It will have a brown to light brown eyes, nose, and nails. This is a recessive color and must be showing or carried in both parents to appear.

CREAM
True cream will be from a platinum blonde to butter yellow in color. It will have black eyes, black nose and black nails.

BLACK/CREAM
Black/cream will be black all over with cream points (cream on feet, over eyes, on face around muzzle, on chest, under tail). It will have black eyes, black nose, and black nails.

BLUE/TAN
Blue and tan is a diluted black/tan. It will be a gun metal blue color with tan points. It will have grey eyes, grey nose, and grey nails. This is a recessive color and must be showing or carried in both parents to appear.

ISABELLA(fawn)/TAN
Isabella/Tan is a diluted chocolate/tan. It will appear to be a washed out chocolate/tan. Its color should resemble a Weimaraner but with tan points. It will have grey eyes, grey nose and grey nails. This is a recessive color and must be showing or carried in both parents to appear.
